Saw this effect the other day and decided that it was worth a try. It's quite an easy effect in practice but hard to get spot on. I began with taking a couple of headshots in my makeshift studio (A black fabric throw hung over a door) and then a few shots of my hands, These were taken using off camera flash using bounce flash with a bounce card to provide the fill light.
The shots are then imported into Photoshop, processed though raw and tweaked so that the hands cover the face. It's then just a case of using layer masks and blending tools to get the desired effect.
